I altered my ego and gave away art for free.

Throwing Art, Holding Time
Reflections on a night at the Lyric Hyperion

You can watch the video show, but to really be there, you had to catch the art. Or be handed it. Or have it thrown at you.

What a night. What an audience! The Lyric Hyperion Theatre was buzzing with curiosity and generosity, and I got to stand right in the middle of it—contemplating the value of art in real time, with real people.

We engage so differently online than we do face-to-face. I kept thinking: You’d never cut someone off in a grocery line the way people do on the freeway. And you’d

never catch a drawing through a screen.

I always give away art—on Instagram, on my website, and digitally. Does that have value? I think it does, but I’m also not sure. It’s still a mystery to me, which is maybe the whole point.

Sharing art in the room, together, changed everything. We became humans with tangible objects. I threw my timeline into the audience—literally—tossing drawings from 2000 and 2025 into the air. People gravitated toward what spoke to them. They held it, took it home. The space between the artist and the audience collapsed for a moment. It felt like magic.

I ripped up drawings. Gave them away. Shared an experience.

Will I ever do it again? I honestly don’t know. But I want to keep pushing myself—to get up there, on stage, and throw myself into the hands of time.

A huge part of this experience was the class that led to it. Kym Priess created something rare by inviting us to leave our egos at the door. Her creative energy made anything feel possible. The Lyric Hyperion team made me feel instantly at home, even as a newcomer.

I’ll be back, whether on stage or in the audience. Thank you to everyone who showed up, caught a piece of art, and helped create a night I won’t forget.
